Profile of Mr Sohail Choksy MD FRCS

I am a Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon. I am employed as a full time NHS Consultant at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust. I do private consultations on Monday mornings and Thursday evenings at the Oaks Hospital, Colchester.

Career Profile

I qualified as a doctor in 1992. I was lucky enough to have received training in a number of different centres which has given me a wide breadth of experience. I did my training in London where I did my house jobs, Leicester and East Anglia where I did my Senior House Officer and Junior Registrar training. I completed my vascular training in Sheffield where I did a research degree at the Sheffield Vascular Institute, one of the foremost vascular centres in the UK.

What do I do?

I am a vascular surgeon and specialise in disorders affecting the arteries and veins all over the body outside the heart which includes varicose veins.

A bulk of my other work includes treating patients with PAD (peripheral arterial disease) in whom the arteries are narrowed. This condition usually affects the leg circulation and can cause symptoms ranging from mild pain when walking to severe pain at rest. I also specialise in repair of aneurysms (ballooning or swelling of an artery usually the aorta) using a technique called EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) which is an alternative to open operation. Another area that I specialise in is the formation of haemodialysis fistulas for patients requiring dialysis in those in whom the kidneys have failed.

Academic Background

I have published in a number of peer reviewed journals (see below) and have also presented in a number of scientific meetings. My research was on the biology of critical limb ischaemia and involved measuring levels of a particular substance (vascular endothelial growth factor) that stimulates growth of new blood vessels in patients with a poor circulation.
